Christian Brand wins Compass Pointe Classic despite tough scoring conditions

Brand shoots final round 69 to win Compass Pointe Classic

Monday, May 8th, 2017: After 4 tough scoring days, a weather delay, and high winds, Christian Brand secured his 2nd National Series win in 2 seasons. Brand started the day 1 shot off the lead of Luke Hopkins and Ryan Sullivan, but quickly erased that deficit with 4 straight birdies on holes 2-5 while in route to a 3-under opening 9. Brand went on to make 2 birdies and 2 bogies on the back 9 and ended the day with a 3-under 69. Before the final day, Brand put himself into contention with a back nine 33 on Friday to shot a 1-under round of 71. With winds gusting over 40 miles an hour at times, that 1-under 71 was the round of the day.  With this win, Brand becomes the first Bradley Putters Experience winner, and the leader in “The 44” race for Q-School sponsorship. Brand attributed his success in the final 2 rounds to a putter change. He switched to a putter that had more loft which allowed him to start the ball rolling early on top of the young TifT Champion Bermuda grass.

Brand is the first winner of the Bradley Putters Experience. A Bradley Putters Experience will be given away to each of our 4 Major winners this season. The trip includes oversight and design of a custom putter, and some of the best things Southern Oregon has to offer. In addition, Brand also received a Popticals Prize package.

Luke Hopkins who started the final round in a tie for the lead shot a 1-under round of 71, but fell 1 shot shy of a playoff. Hopkins made the turn in 2-under par, but a double bogey on 14 put him at 1-over on the back. Hopkins played holes 16 and 18 better the final 2 rounds, after both of those holes proved difficult for him the first 2 days. After playing holes 16 and 18 a combined 5-over par the first 2 days, he played them in even par the final 2 days.

Rounding out the top 5 was Ryan Troyer at even par, and Riley Davenport and Ryan Sullivan at 1-over par. Troyer posted a final round 2-under 70 to move up the leaderboard, while Davenport shot a 3-under 69.

The 26 players who competed this week earned the first points awarded of “The 44” Race, in which the top 44 players on the SwingThought TOUR Points list from now until October 29th will receive $2,000 Q-School Sponsorship.
