White overcomes tough scoring conditions to win at Stone Mountain.
Wednesday April 5th, 2017- Heading into the Final Round at Stone Mountain, James White was in a 2 way tie for 2nd with Grant Leaver. After dealing with wet and windy conditions all week, the 2 came down the stretch in a familiar place, at the top of the leaderboard. After 18 holes, the event looked to be heading to a playoff, that was until Grant Leaver called a 2 stroke penalty on himself after he hit his coin on the 14th hole.
“This was a good win with a strong field, but I really hate what happened to Grant I wish we could have settled it on the course. ” stated White. During all 4 days of play, the course and weather were tough. White won with a 4 day total of 2-under, highlighted by a 2nd round 63, the lowest round of the tournament. White was the only player in the field to break par for the week, and Leaver finished at Even for the 4 days. The win capped off an impressive 4 tournament stretch for White who has finished in the top 4 every tournament this season.
Despite calling a 2 stroke penalty on himself, Leaver still finished solo 2nd at Even Par. Leaver who also came into the week in good form picked up his third straight Top-3 finish which includes two solo 2nd performances.“Assessing a penalty on yourself after hearing that you’re in a playoff speaks a lot about Leaver’s character and integrity” stated Jason Dores, Director of Tour Operations. With his constant play, Leaver now sits 2nd on the 2017 Money List which is where he concluded the 2016 season.
