Armstrong Wins in Professional Debut

Armstrong wins professional debut on SwingThought TOUR at Three Ridges.

A week before his start, Dawson Armstrong made the decision to turn professional and skip out on Lipscomb University’s postseason play. On Saturday, that decision proved fruitful as Armstrong won the STTOUR event at Three Ridges and took home a $10,000 first place prize. Armstrong who had recently earned medalist honors at Mackenzie Tour Q-School at TPC Sawgrass, also earned an exemption into the Tour’s Nashville Golf Open.

Armstrong got his tournament started with a first round 4-under 68. His 2nd round got off to a better start after an eagle on 2 and a birdie on 3. Armstrong made a bogey on 5, but bounced right back with birdies on 6 and 7, to make the turn at 4-under. Armstrong made 4 consecutive pars before making birdies on 14 and 15, and making another eagle on 17 to post a back 9 32 for a 2nd round total of 8-under par. Armstrong followed up his 2nd round 64, with a bogey free 6-under 66 to head into the final round with a 2 shot lead over Daniel Claytor.

Starting the final round, Armstrong made birdies on 2,3,5 and 6 to make the turn at 4-under. He made 2 bogeys on 13 and 16, but bounced back with birdies on 17 and 18 finishes his final round with a 4-under 68, good enough to win by 2.

After an opening round 3-under 69, Daniel Claytor took it low during the 2nd round. Claytor’s 2nd round started with 2 birdies on 2 and 4. He made a bogey on 5, and made a birdie on 9 that was the start of an unbelievable stretch of golf. After his birdie on 9, Claytor birdied 10 and 11 before the horn sounded to suspend play. After the delay Claytor came out and eagled 12, and followed that up with birdies on 13,14,and 15. He threw putted for bogey on 16, but bounced back with birdies on 17 and 18 for a 2nd round co-course record 10-under 62, which included a back nine 28. This is the 2nd time this season Claytor has fired a course record 62, the last time coming in victory at Eagle Harbor.

Following his stellar 2nd round, Claytor shot a 3rd round 3-under 69, to move to within 2 entering the final round. After 2 birdies on 2 and 3, Claytor made bogey on 5 and 9. He added 4 birdies on the inward 9 to shoot a final round 4-under 68 to earn a solo 2nd place finish.

Finishing 3rd was Kevin Lucas. Lucas, a winner earlier this year at Columbia Country Club, was looking to keep his success going. After an opening round 71, Lucas put himself in position after a 2nd round bogey free 67. He followed that up with an 8-under 64. Lucas made bogey on his first hole but bounced back with birdies on 2,4,5 and 6 to make the turn at 3-under. He added birdies on 10,12,14,15 and 17 to shoot a back 9 31. Lucas entered the final round, 4 shots back of the leader. After birdies on 1,2 and 4, Lucas made a bogey on 5 but bounced back with birdies on 6 and 7. He added 2 more birdies on the back, but a bogey on 18 saw him finish in solo 3rd.

Rounding out the Top 5 were Tyler Light and Ryan Sullivan. Light shot rounds of 71,67,68 and 68 to post a 4 round total of 14-under par. Sullivan, coming off his 2nd place finish at Tanglewood, shot rounds of 68,70,70 and 70 for a total of 10-under par.
