Daniel Claytor entered 2018, looking to replicate his success from his 2017 season. On Saturday, Claytor did just that with his win at SouthWood Golf Club in Tallahassee, FL. The Barton College Alum, came off a 2017 season where he won 4 times and was awarded the Daniel Converse Award for performance, integrity, and professionalism.
The first round at SouthWood was highlighted by ST School winner Wade Binfield. Binfield shot a first round 5-under 65. After birdies on 5, and 7 and a bogey on 9, Binfield made the turn at 1-under par. He made an eagle on the par 5 10th hole, followed by a birdie on the drivable par 4 11th. He made another birdie on 14 to post a back 9 32. Binfield led by 1 over Ryan Elmore. Elmore got his tournament started with birdies on 1, and 2. He followed that up with a bogey on 3. Elmore then made birdies on 5, 7, and 8. He made another bogey on 9, to turn in 3-under. He made 8 pars, and 1 birdie on hole 11 to finish with a 4-under 68. Brunswick CC winner Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey finished his 1st round with a 3-under 69 and joined Binfield and Elmore as the only 3 players to post under par scores during round 1.
Overnight leader Wade Binfield got off to another good start in round 2. Binfield made birdies on 5, 7, and 8 to make the turn at 3-under. He added another birdie on 15, but a costly triple bogey on 18 dropped him to 1-under on his round. Ryan Elmore shot a 1-over round of 73 during round 2, and Tommy Gainey shot a 1-under 71. The round of the day was shot by Daniel Claytor. After opening with an even par 72, Claytor shot a bogey free 6-under 66. Claytor made birdies on 3 and 4 to shoot a front 9 34. He then proceeded to make birdies on 10, 11, 15, and 18 to shoot a back 9 32 to tie Binfield heading into the final 2 rounds.
Heading into the third round, the winds picked up and the scoring conditions got tougher. Overnight Co-leader Daniel Claytor, continued his great play from the 2nd round, into the 3rd round. Claytor shot a 3rd round 7-under 65 to distance himself from the rest of the pack. After make a birdie on 1, Claytor followed it up with birdies on 5 and 6 to turn at 3-under. He then birdied 10 and 11. He made a bogey on 12, but bounced back on 16 with an eagle. Claytor then added another birdie on 18 to post a back 9 32, to take a 6 shot lead into the final round. Co-leader Wade Binfield wasn’t able to match the play of Claytor during the 3rd round. Binfield made a lone bogey on 6, to turn at 1-over. He birdied 10, 16, and 18, but made a bogey on 12 to shoot a 3rd round 1-under 71, to take solo 2nd heading into the final round. Anthony Maccaglia shot the 2nd lowest round of the day with a 2-under 70. Ryan Elmore shot a 3rd round 71 to move into 3rd heading into the final round.
During the final round, Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey made a move up the leaderboard. Gainey who started the day in 4th, made the turn at 2-under after birdies on 8 and 9. Gainey then added 2 more birdies on 16 and 18 to finish with a final round bogey free 4-under 68, which was good enough to move him into solo 2nd. Binfield who entered the final round, 6 back of Claytor shot a final round 2-over 74 to finish 3rd. Claytor posted a final round 1-over 73 to win by 5 shots of Gainey. Rounding out the top 5 were Ryan Elmore at 4-under overall, and Anthony Maccaglia at Even par for the tournament. With his win Claytor earn 3,370 ST Points.
