On Friday, Daniel Claytor captured his 7th career SwingThought TOUR victory, after firing a final round 7-under 62. Due to some winter overkill and heavy rains prior to the event, the course had to be played as a par 69, and players took advantage of the short course and fired low numbers all week.
Entering Friday’s final round, Claytor found himself 4 shots behind leader Luke Hopkins. Claytor quickly erased that deficit after making 2 quick birdies on 2 and 3 followed by 2 more birdies on 5 and 6. He added another birdie on 9 to post a front 9 5-under 30. Claytor would go on to add 2 more birdies on 13 and 14 to shoot a final round 7-under 62 to win by 2 strokes. During the week, he front 9 is where Claytor separated himself from the field. He was able to play the first 9 holes a combined total of 12-under par for the 3 rounds, which was best in the field.
This win is Claytor’s 3rd this season, to go along with victories at SouthWood GC, in Tallahassee, and Eagle Harbor, in Jacksonville. With this victory, Claytor also ties Wade Binfield for the most wins thus far during the 2018 season.
Finishing behind Claytor, were Bruce Woodall, Ryan Sullivan, and Luke Hopkins all in a Tie for 2nd at 13-under. Luke Hopkins entered the final round as the leader by 2, after firing a 8-under 61 during the 2nd round. Hopkins wasn’t able to keep his hot streak going, as he made his lone birdie on the front 9 at the par 5 3rd. He turned in 1-under 34. Hopkins dropped his only shot of the day on the par 4 14th, but made an birdie on the par 5 18th to shoot a 1-under par 68.
Ryan Sullivan entered the final round 3 shots behind Hopkins. Sullivan got off to a good start making birdies on 1, 3, and 5 to make the turn in 3-under 32. After starting his back 9 with 4 straight par’s, Sullivan added a bogey on the par 4 14th but was able to close with back-to-back birdies on 17 and 18 to get to 13-under par for the tournament. Sullivan continues to play well this season on the SwingThought TOUR. In his 4 starts this season, Sullivan has finished no worse than 5th, and has 2 runner-up finishes.
Finishing out the group at 13-under was Bruce Woodall. Woodall held the lead at the conclusion of the first round after he fired a 6-under 63. He followed that up with a 4-under 65 to enter the final round 1 shot behind. Woodall started his final round with a birdie on 2. He added birdies on 5 and 6, before adding another birdie on 9 to make the turn at 4-under. Woodall made bogies on 12 and 14, but got one back with a birdie on 17. With this runner-up finish, Woodall has finished 3rd or better in 3 of his 4 starts this season.
