David Holmes Earns Victory at Gibson Bay

University of Tennessee alum David Holmes earned his maiden SwingThought TOUR event at Gibson Bay, after holding off a charge from J.B Williams and Kelby Burton.

Holmes got his tournament started with a bogey free 7-under 65. He opened his front 9  during the first round with back to back birdies on 6 and 7 to turn at 2-under. Holmes made the turn and proceeded to make birdies on 10, and 11. He added 3 more birdies on 13, 16 and 18 to shoot 7-under and take a 3 shot lead into the final round.

Entering the final round with his 3 shot lead, Holmes got off to a great start after making a birdie on 1. Holmes made 2 bogeys on 3 and 6 before adding back to back birdies on 8 and 9, to turn at 1-under. After making the turn Holmes added another birdie on 10, but followed that up with a bogey on 11. Holmes would add a birdie on 14, before making 4 consecutive pars to close out his tournament, and hold on for a 1-shot victory.

The biggest mover during the final round was J.B Williams. Williams, a Kentucky native entered the final round in a tie for 5th, but jumped into a tie for 2nd after a final round 67. Williams got his final round going with back to back birdies on 1, and 2. He would add a bogey on 6 before bouncing back with a birdie on 7. After adding another bogey on 9, Williams opened with a front 9 1-under 31. After a par on 10, Willliams added back to back birdies on 11, and 12. He added 2 more birdies coming in on 14 and 16 to shoot a back 9 4-under 31 to post 8-under total to finish in a tie for 2nd. This is Williams 2nd finish of 3rd or better in 3 starts this season.

Also finishing in a tie for 2nd was Kelby Burton. Burton entered the final round in a tie for 2nd after posting a 4-under first round. Burton made birdies on 2, 5, and 7 to make the turn at 3-under par. He then made 3 straight par’s before adding a birdie on 14. Burton then made 4 straight par’s to close out his round and post his 2nd straight 4-under 68.

Local boy, and University of Kentucky alum Cooper Musselman finished solo 4th. Musselman, who entered the final round 4 shots behind Holmes, fired his 2nd consecutive round of  3-under 69 to move up the leaderboard and finish at 6-under for the tournament. Musselman, like most players in the field, took advantage of the opening 2 holes. He made back to back birdies to get his round going. Musselman would add a bogey on 4, before adding another birdie on 7, to turn in 2-under. He would add a lone birdie on 15 to post 3-under. Musselman, right out of college was granted an exemption into the Barbasol Championship in the Kentucky the week of July 19th-22nd.

Rounding out the top 5 were Vincent Whaley and Pete Webb. Whaley shot a final round 4-under 68 to move up 5 spots and finish in a Tie for 5th. Webb shot a final round 69, to move up from 8th, to a Tie for 5th.
