Tommy “Two Gloves” Gainey Wins State Series Event at Brunswick CC

Monday, January 15th 2018:

Heading into the final round at Brunswick Country Club, Big Break alums Mark Silvers and Tommy Gainey were battling it out at the top of the leaderboard. Silvers 5-under after round 1, was leading Gainey by 2.

Silvers got his first round started with 2 opening pars. He then followed that up with 3 consecutive birdies on holes 3, 4, and 5. He added another birdie on 9 and made the turn at 4-under. He sandwiched 2 birdies around a bogey on 13, to shoot a back 9 34 and to finish round 1 at 5-under. Gainey also had a stretch on the front 9 where he made 3 consecutive birdies. Gainey birdied 4, 5, and 6 to make the turn in 3-under 33. Gainey made a birdie and a bogey on the back 9 to shoot a round 1 3-under 68.

Behind Silvers and Gainey were 4 players tied for 3rd at 1-under. ST Member, and Brunswick Country Club member Trevor Smith lead the way at 1-under. He was joined by Scott Diel, Chad Chancey, and ST Member Jimmy Gilliam.

Mark Silvers got his final round started quickly with a birdie on 1, followed by another birdie on the 3rd. He made a double bogey on 5 and made bogeys on 7, and 8 to turn in 2-over 38. Silvers made a birdie on 10. He made a bogey on 12, before adding another birdie on 14 to shoot a back 9 1-under 34. He ended his tournament at 4-under par.

Gainey made 2 birdies on the front 9 on holes 3 and 4. He made all pars the rest of the front 9 to turn in 2-under 34. After 4 straight pars to start the back 9, Gainey then made back to back birdies on 14 and 15. He made a bogey on 18 to wrap up his 2nd consecutive round of 3-under 68 to win by 2 over Silvers.

After starting his final round in a tie for 3rd, Trevor Smith shot a final round 2-under 69 to finish at 3-under and in solo 3rd. ST Member David Holmes finished in solo 4th after shooting back to back even par rounds of 71. Rounding out the Top 5 were Austin Morrison, Scott Diel, Jimmy Gilliam and Chad Chancey all at 1-over.
