Kajiya wins Brunswick Shootout
Monday August 28th, 2017: Masanori Kajiya took home his 1st Career SwingThought win last week at Brunswick Country Club. Kajiya won the 36 hole shootout with a 2 day total of 8-under par, which gave him a 1 shot victory over Bruce Woodall, Ryan Benton, and and Jake Tucker. Kajiya started the tournament with a 1st Round 2-under 69, which put him at a Tie for 5th entering the final round. After starting his final round with a front 9 2-under 34, Kajiya birdied holes 11, 13, and 14 to get to 7 under par. On 18 Kajiya made birdie to post 8-under and take the lead in the clubhouse lead, and eventually the victory. After making the turn at 1 over during Round 1, Kajiya proceeded to play his final 27 holes bogey free and 9-under par.
Ryan Benton finished in a Tie for 2nd after his shot a final round 6-under 65. Benton started his round in solo 7th at 1-under par, but his final round 65 vaulted him up the leaderboard. Benton made birdies on 1, 3, and 6 before making a bogey on 7. He bounced right back and birdied 8 to make the turn at 3-under. Benton continued his hot play by making birdies on 10, 13, and 14 to post 7-under.
Fresh off his victory the week before in Alabama, Bruce Woodall continued his hot play by also finishing in a Tie for 2nd. Woodall came out hot in his final round birdieing holes 1, 3, 4, and 5. After making the turn at 4-under Woodall lost his momentum after bogies on holes 10 and 15. He did squeeze a birdie in on hole 14 but after his bogey on 15 he dropped back to 7-under. In his 7 events this year, Woodall has 2 victories and 5 top 5 finishes this year.
Round 1 leader Jake Tucker shot a final round 1-under to finish Tied for 2nd. Tucker opened round 1 with a 6-under 65, which included a hole in one on the Par 3 4th Hole. Tucker opened his final round with a bogey on the 1st, and followed that up with birdies on 3, 5, and 9 to open with a 2-under 34. He made a double bogey on 10, but bounced back with a birdie on 11. He finished his round with 7 straight birdies to finish at 7-under.
Rounding out the Top 5 was Woody Woodward. Woodward shot back to back 3-under 68’s to finish at 6-under. Woodward started his final round with birdies on 2, 3, 4, and 7 to turn in 4 under. He made a birdie on 14, but made bogeys on 16 and 18 to finish at 6-under par.
