McLuen’s Back-to-back 67’s Propel Him to Victory at Southern Hills
Tuesday March 12, 2019: A few years ago, Jay McLuen wasn’t sure he’d be able to play golf after a serious health scare. Fast forward to Tuesday and he was victorious at Southern Hills. McLuen entered the final round tied for 4th after an opening round 67. McLuen started his final round 3 shots behind round 1 leader, Conner Godsey. A quick birdie on 1 got McLuen’s final round off to a fast start but he followed that up with a double bogey on 2. After par’s on 3 and 4, McLuen made an eagle on 5, followed by back-to-back birdies on 6 and 7 to make the turn at 3-under par. After making the turn, McLuen went on a 6 hike stretch of birdie, birdie, bogey, bogey, birdie, birdie on holes 10-15. He would add another birdie on 17 before making a bogey on 18 to shoot a final round 5-under 67. After anxiously waiting for the remaining groups to finish, McLuen wound up earning a 2 shot victory over Hunter Stewart. With victory, McLuen now has 4 career victories on the SwingThought TOUR.
Finishing in solo 2nd for the second consecutive week was Hunter Stewart. Stewart started his day in a tie for 6th. He started his day with a birdie on 1, and then made 3 consecutive birdies on 5,6 and 7 before adding a bogey on 8 to make the turn at 3-under. Stewart made back-to-back birdies on 10 and 11 before making a bogey on 12. He quickly bounced back with birdies on 13 and 15. Coming down 18, Stewart was at 10-under for the tournament but a double bogey on the last dropped him back to 8-under total, earning him his 2nd runner up finish in 5 days.
Rounding out the top 5 were 4 players tied for 3rd. Michael Nagy, Alex Weiss, Chase Parker, and Jack McGuire all finished at 7-under for day two. Michael Nagy shot the round of the day with 6-under 66. Nagy made back-to-back birdies on 1 and 2. He made 3 more birdies on 4, 7, and 9 but he had 2 bogies on 6 and 8 to turn at 3-under. Nagy then made 3 more birdies on the back 9 to move up tied for 13th into a tie for 3rd. After making an eagle on 9 and making the turn at 2-under, Alex Weiss had to play the majority of his back 9 with a cracked driver face. He didn’t let that stop him as he made birdies on 12 and 18 to earn his first career top 5 finish on the SwingThought TOUR.
On a day where there were plenty of bogies and double bogies to go around, Chase Parker made 16 pars, and 2 birdies to finish tied for 3rd. Parker who made one bogey all week, earned his first top 5 on the SwingThought TOUR in 3 years. Jack McGuire entered the final round in a tie for 2nd. He started his final round with 4 straight pars before adding a birdie on 5. He would go on to make a bogey on 7 before adding another birdie on 9 to make the turn at 1-under. McGuire would make 1 birdie on the back 9 while bogies on 13 and 17 to shoot a final round even par 72 to earn his first ever top 5 finish on the SwingThought TOUR.
