Ryan Sullivan Wins at Highland Oaks in a Playoff

Sullivan outlasts Leaver during playoff at Highland Oaks

Monday October 23rd, 2017: 54 Holes wasn’t enough to determine a winner last week at Highland Oaks, as Ryan Sullivan and Grant Leaver found themselves tied atop the leaderboard at 7-under par.

Heading into the final round, Sullivan was tied for the lead with Wade Binfield at 2-under par. Sullivan made a birdie on the par-5 4th hole, but followed that up with a bogey on 5. He added another birdie on hole 7 to turn in 1-under par. His playing partner Wade Binfield birdied 3,5, and 8, but made a bogey on hole 6 to make the turn at 2-under par.

Meanwhile in the penultimate pairing, Grant Leaver was making a charge. He got his day started with a birdie on 1, followed by an eagle on 4 and another birdie on 5. Leaver made back-to-back bogies on 6 and 7, but bounced back with a birdie on 8 to turn at 3-under, and tied for the lead with Binfield. Leaver kept his good round going on the back 9 and made birdies on 13,16, and 17 to post a final round 6-under 66 to take the lead in the clubhouse at 7-under

Coming down the stretch, Binfield couldn’t keep his momentum from the front 9 going, and he made 7 pars and 2 bogies and shot a final round even par 72. Heading into the back 9, Sullivan was trailing Binfield and Grant Leaver by 1 shot. Sullivan got his back 9 going with birdies on 10 and 12. He added another birdie on the par 5 16th to get to 6-under par. After a par on 17, Sullivan came to the par 5 18th down a shot, and was on the green in 3 with a 20 foot birdie putt to tie Leaver. He made the putt and shot a final round 5-under 67 to tie Leaver at 7-under.

On the 1st playoff hole, both men found the fairway and hit the green in regulation. After Leaver missed his birdie putt, Sullivan stepped up and made his to secure his victory. After their playoff Sullivan jokingly said “what I shot would have won most times, but my arch-nemesis (Leaver) had to go low today”. The victory was Sullivan’s 1st on the SwingThought TOUR, and continued his year of great play. In 6 National Series events, Sullivan has 6 Top-5 finishes including two 2nd place finishes and a win.

Grant Leaver continued his great year with another runner-up finish. Leaver has played in 9 National Series events this season and has 8 finishes of 3rd or better, including 3 wins and 4 2nd place finishes.

Wade Binfield wrapped up a 3rd place finish at 2-under par. Binfield shot an even par round of 72 to finish solo 3rd. Dothan, AL native Ryan Benton finished in 4th place at even par for the tournament.
